At the center of this turmoil are accusations surrounding Iran’s nuclear weapon development and the strong concerns from surrounding countries. Notably, the confrontation between Israel and Iran is closely linked to this nuclear issue. Iran continues to deny developing nuclear weapons, but many suspicions remain about its claims.

Is Iran's "Accidental Enrichment" the Truth?  

Iran insists that it is not pursuing nuclear weapons. However, in February 2023, Iran explained to the United Nations inspections that a level of uranium enrichment close to that required for nuclear weapons occurred due to an “accident.” This explanation is widely viewed as implausible, with critics arguing there are too many questions and inconsistencies. If it were truly possible for such a level of uranium enrichment to occur accidentally, it would pose a significant problem in itself.

Reports indicate that, over the past 30 years, Iran has spent approximately 2 trillion dollars on nuclear development, compared to around 1.5 trillion dollars earned from oil exports during the same period. - Israel and Saudi Arabia's Concerns: For Saudi Arabia, Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons is a significant worry. For Israel, which sees Iran as a rival and perceives Iranian-backed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah as threats, a successful nuclear program by Iran would be “nothing but a threat.”  

- Regional Instability: If Iran succeeds in acquiring nuclear weapons, the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East could be destabilized. Therefore, preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear capabilities has become a top priority. The Trump administration sought to establish a new nuclear agreement under the principle of “absolutely preventing Iran from possessing nuclear weapons.”  

- Israeli Countermeasures: Israel considers Iran’s underground nuclear facilities, such as Fordow, to be highly fortified, requiring powerful weapons like bunker busters. Reports indicate that Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, has pinpointed the locations of Iranian nuclear scientists and has successfully targeted specific facilities. Furthermore, Iran claims that information from the UN’s IAEA has been used to locate its scientists, suggesting that nations or organizations supporting Iran are nearly nonexistent.

Choice Between Negotiation and Catastrophe  

President Trump set deadlines for Iran to enter negotiations, but when Iran did not respond, a series of Israeli attacks followed. Trump has stated that multiple chances were given to Iran but were wasted, and remarked that Israel possesses “the most lethal military equipment” and “knows how to use it,” implying the potential use of bunker-busters or even a final ultimatum. This can be interpreted as a warning: “It’s better to negotiate before there’s nothing left.”  

Meanwhile, in response to Israel’s aggression, Iran has announced an indefinite suspension of talks with the US regarding nuclear development, deepening the rift between the two sides.
